Urine & Stool Tests

Hi-Tech Medical Laboratory offers comprehensive urine and stool testing services to help diagnose various conditions related to the urinary tract, digestive system, and overall health. Our advanced testing methods ensure accurate and reliable results.

Urine Tests

Urinalysis (Routine Urine Examination)

A urinalysis is a test of your urine that evaluates the physical, chemical, and microscopic properties of urine. It's used to detect and manage a wide range of disorders, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, and diabetes.

Parameters Measured:

  • Physical examination: Color, clarity, odor, specific gravity
  • Chemical examination: pH, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, nitrite, leukocyte esterase
  • Microscopic examination: Red blood cells, white blood cells, epithelial cells, casts, crystals, bacteria, yeast

Sample Type: Random urine sample

Turnaround Time: Same Day

Special Instructions: Collect midstream urine in a sterile container

Urine Culture & Sensitivity

A urine culture is a test that identifies bacteria and yeast in the urine that may be causing a urinary tract infection (UTI). If bacteria or yeast are found, sensitivity testing is performed to determine which antibiotics will be effective for treatment.

Test Details:

  • Identification of bacteria or yeast present in urine
  • Quantification of bacterial growth (colony count)
  • Antibiotic sensitivity testing

Sample Type: Clean catch midstream urine

Turnaround Time: 48-72 hours

Special Instructions: Collect midstream urine in a sterile container, avoid contamination

24-Hour Urine Collection

A 24-hour urine collection is a test that measures the composition of your urine over a 24-hour period. It provides more accurate information about kidney function and various metabolic processes than a single urine sample.

Common Tests Using 24-Hour Collection:

  • Protein (for kidney disease)
  • Creatinine clearance (kidney function)
  • Calcium, oxalate, citrate, uric acid (for kidney stones)
  • Sodium, potassium (electrolyte balance)
  • Catecholamines (for pheochromocytoma)
  • Cortisol (for Cushing's syndrome)

Sample Type: All urine produced over 24 hours

Turnaround Time: 2-3 days

Special Instructions: Special container provided, refrigeration may be required

Pregnancy Test

A urine pregnancy test detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy. It's used to confirm pregnancy.

Test Details:

  • Qualitative detection of hCG in urine
  • Results reported as positive or negative

Sample Type: Random urine sample

Turnaround Time: Same Day (usually within minutes)

Special Instructions: Morning urine sample preferred for early pregnancy detection

Stool Tests

Stool Routine Examination

A stool routine examination evaluates the physical, chemical, and microscopic properties of stool. It's used to detect digestive disorders, parasitic infections, and other gastrointestinal conditions.

Parameters Measured:

  • Physical examination: Color, consistency, presence of blood, mucus
  • Chemical examination: Occult blood, pH, fat
  • Microscopic examination: White blood cells, red blood cells, parasites (eggs, larvae, cysts), undigested food particles

Sample Type: Fresh stool sample

Turnaround Time: Same Day

Special Instructions: Collect in a clean, dry container

Stool Culture

A stool culture is a test that detects and identifies bacteria in the stool that may be causing gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, or bloody stools.

Common Pathogens Detected:

  • Salmonella
  • Shigella
  • Campylobacter
  • E. coli (pathogenic strains)
  • Yersinia
  • Vibrio

Sample Type: Fresh stool sample

Turnaround Time: 48-72 hours

Special Instructions: Collect in a sterile container, transport to lab promptly

Occult Blood Test

A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) checks for hidden (occult) blood in the stool. It can be an early sign of colorectal cancer or other conditions causing bleeding in the digestive tract.

Test Details:

  • Detection of small amounts of blood not visible to the naked eye
  • Results reported as positive or negative

Sample Type: Stool sample

Turnaround Time: Same Day

Special Instructions: Avoid certain foods and medications before the test (red meat, certain vegetables, vitamin C, aspirin)

Parasite Examination

A stool parasite examination specifically looks for parasites and their eggs in the stool. It's used to diagnose parasitic infections of the digestive system.

Common Parasites Detected:

  • Giardia lamblia
  • Entamoeba histolytica
  • Cryptosporidium
  • Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm)
  • Hookworm
  • Taenia (tapeworm)
  • Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm)

Sample Type: Fresh stool sample

Turnaround Time: Same Day

Special Instructions: Multiple samples may be required on different days

Test Information
